Incorporated in 1938, BARC Electric Cooperative now serves over 12,000 meters spanning the counties of Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Highland and Rockbridge. It is a non-profit, tax-paying organization vitally interested in the residential, industrial and commercial development of its service area. BARC is a member Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, a Generation & Transmission cooperative based in Richmond, VA whitch provides power for its twelve member systems.

BARC employs over 45 full-time people. BARC is governed by a board of directors with the daily operations being overseen by the managerial staff, headed by General Manager, Bruce M. King. The regular board meeting is the third Wednesday of every month.
